Hi Reggie, thanks for writing this. I, too, am a former Cape Fear Academy student (6th to 10th grade), just a few years before you. Being a naive young kid, I had no idea at first — I sort of caught on before I left and that was one of the reasons I did — that it was literally a segregation academy that my parents had sent me to so I wouldn’t be around “bad” (i.e., black) kids. Had I stayed, my graduation speaker would have been Jesse Helms. Needless to say, there was a hell of a lot of racism in that school. Many years later, I learned that the ancestors of some of my classmates had been involved in the 1898 massacre. Glad you were able to survive and manage to get a good education there. I also found it academically good and met some really nice kids there, although being among the brighter kids at Hoggard meant that I also wound up with mostly excellent teachers there, and I liked the diversity.
